| Bio: | About The Character QUICK ANSWERS Name: David Elijah Paulovitch Karofsky Journal: (will be sg_dkarofsky) Graduation Year: 2012 (senior) School Activities: Football and hockey; was a member of the Mathletes-type group in freshman year until he got his first slushie; is often 'forced' to 'help out' during the physics and robotics club meetings (i.e. he's buds with the teacher who understands that he wants to be part of the club but is too worried about his reputation); is thinking really hard about joining the GSA as a Bully Whip to decrease on shenaniganry; considering joining art club. Class Schedule: Ceramics Lvl2, AP Calculus Lvl2, AP English 12, AP Physics, Weight Lifting, Studio Art, AP Modern History, study hall (As a note, I have literally noooooooo idea how AP works - I've only ever taken one AP class and I spent most of it passing notes with a friend. Everything else I did was IB, so if I get something horribly wrong please correct me.) After School Job: Helps out at the Marina; during the summer works part-time at a science camp that really should just be called 'look at all the different ways we can use basic chemistry and physics concepts to BLOW SHIT UP' Sexuality: Technically is considered questioning, if pressed (like, literally, with stones, like that guy in The Crucible) would label himself as bi (even though he's really pretty much entirely gay) Birthday & Other Important Dates: Birthday: December 13, 1993 (17); July 4th, 1997 (dad officially gained custody); July 20th, 1997 (moved into current home) Supernatural Ability: LONG ANSWERS Appearance: Dave is, like all teenagers, very concerned with his appearance and usually unsatisfied with it. For him, it's less 'oh god who is going to notice this giant zit on my forehead' and more 'oh god who is going to notice just how much of a giant freak I am'. Since he has always felt out of place due to his conflicting emotions and less-than-normal upbringing, Dave tends to over-correct the imbalance by copying what he sees around him to the letter. He wears the same types of clothing that his friends and peers do, often buying shirts he sees guys like Hudson and Puckerman wearing, and he will only take his letterman off when he's completely alone, even if it's the middle of summer and he's dying of heat exhaustion. This is partially because he doesn't want to be seen as 'weak', partially because his letterman is like a protective layer around him, and partially because he doesn't want people to see his scars. His hair curls when it gets too long and he has beauty marks (both of which he hates, as they've earned him the nickname 'Marilyn' [i.e. Monroe] with his teammates). He does not think that he's at all attractive and so he gets weirded out when his Baba's friends call him 'a handsome young man'. Dave, in fact, does not take any compliments well - they usually mean trouble. Likes & Dislikes: Likes - science, math, art, Shakespeare, hockey, football, feeling like he belongs Dislikes - mullets, Scott Cooper, pulled muscles, Strengths & Weaknesses: Strengths - incredibly intelligent; able to pick up on subtle cues from those around him; good balance (helpful on skates); high pain tolerance; very curious Weaknesses - overreacts easily; constantly worries about the opinions of others; very little self-worth; teenage hormones Personality: A real Renaissance man, Dave is as equally entertained and fascinated by the brushwork on a painting or the meter of a poem as he is by the delicacy of a mathematical equation or the elegance of a physics reaction. He has an incredible thirst for knowledge that is rivaled only by his thirst for normality. Dave is very obsessed with being normal, which is only fueled by the fact that he knows he's not. He feels constantly at-odds with the world around him and with himself and can never seem to find a balance. Because of all this, he does not like himself at all and is fairly certain he's not worth all the trouble he causes. He's been trying to lay low ever since he got expelled, but seems to be failing at it. Dave's sense of humor tends to be self-depreciating and dark. He's good at getting a laugh at his own expense. He is a giant and apologetic nerd. He thinks research is fun. He's constantly making references to things and spouting off facts, especially when it pertains to something of a decidedly macabre nature. His acting skills are impeccable, as he's able to convince everyone that he's okay. But, really, he's not. Dave very firmly believes that the sun rises and sets on his shoulders, and carries a lot of stress and anxiety with him wherever he goes. This has led to numerous breakdowns and freak outs in the past, but because he and his father don't have the money to get him medicines or send him to a therapist, Dave is forced to deal with this on his own. This ranges from hurting himself emotionally via forcing down his feelings as best he can, to hurting himself physically via cutting, scratching, burning, etc. He has been known to make himself physically ill with his fretting. Dave also has a naturally subservient tendency, in that he actively seeks out ways to please people as much as he can, even at his own detriment. This comes less from a desire to help than from a desire to make sure that people see him as useful, not expendable, as one of his biggest fears is that he will be left alone at the end of the day. People like to exploit this and use him until they can't anymore, then will toss him to the side and ignore him. This only reaffirms to him that he is a waste of space. Dave has attempted suicide three times: once when his schedule forced him to drop hockey for a semester, once after the locker room with Kurt, and once after the locker room with Puck when he was called out on his actions. His dad caught him all three times and finally said that if he didn't stop hurting himself, he was going to have to take 'drastic measures'. He has taken up smoking to relieve some of the tension. Dave also has a very...interesting relationship with God. He wars with himself constantly over whether or not He exists, the parts of him which believe in only science providing fact after fact against and his spiritual side arguing for. However, no matter which side is right, Dave is pretty certain that God has either abandoned him, or He doesn't want him anymore. Relationships: Paul Karofsky (father), Kurt Hummel (crush/mentor?), Blaine Anderson (worst enemy/new friend?), Azimio Adams (best friend?), Finn Hudson (new friend?), Sam Evans (new friend?/nerd buddy?), Puck (casual acquaintance/possible second-worst enemy/unsure of nature of their relationship), Shannon Beiste (mentor/mother figure/role model), Unnamed Art Teacher (mentor, quasi-friend, always poking her nose into things), Unnamed Physics Teacher (mentor, friend), Mr. Schue (would-be mentor) Background: Dave is 3rd gen, the grandson of Russian immigrants. His paternal grandfather, Alecksandr Karofsky, and grandmother, Veronika Karofsky (née Valkov), lived in St. Petersburg until, ten years into their marriage, Veronika finally became pregnant. Alecksandr wanted more for his family than what he thought Russia could offer them, so he moved the two of them to America. Obsessed with Westernization, instead of giving his children traditional Russian names, he instead gifted them with names inspired by the Bible: Peter (oldest), Paul (second-oldest), and two aunts that they don't talk about. (They don't talk about a lot of things in this family, actually.) Paul Karofsky was a hellraiser in his youth, the traditional 'bad boy', modeling himself after James Dean for so many years. He eventually met and fell in love with a woman...after he'd already married a girl who was the child of a family friend. Their affair carried on for many years, until one day she found out that she was pregnant. His first wife left him, and his mistress, after he refused to take responsibility for the child and claimed that it wasn't his, barred him from seeing his son. Paul eventually cleaned up his act, got a steady job with a decent salary, moved to Lima, and went about repairing his relationships only to find that in the intermittent period his mistress had died in a car accident and his son had been put into the system. As you might have guessed, this was Dave. Dave spent his first few years being passed from foster home to foster home. He doesn't remember most of this time period, just a hefty feeling of utter misery. His father eventually managed to track him down and regained custody of him despite several attempts to dispute his claims. However, the legal fees took away a lot of the money he had saved up, and as such, the Karofskys are relatively poor even to this day. Paul, in an attempt to make up for his own mistakes, has drilled into his son from day one that he must always be the best, which he takes to mean 'the best that he can be'. Dave, however, in a classic and whacky (not) case of misunderstanding, thinks that his dad won't approve of him if he isn't the strongest, fastest, smartest, greatest at everything, which he has always striven to be. He will accept nothing but the best from himself, and has developed a complex towards himself. He is not allowed to make mistakes, show signs of weakness, or otherwise be anything but sub-par; everyone else is more than welcome to that, so long as he doesn't give in. Additionally, since the death of his own father just shortly after Dave came back into his life, Paul has become obsessed with tradition and everything that entails. He inadvertently pushes his son into traditional roles - football star, ladies' man, etc. - in an effort to bring about the perfect Nuclear Family. He has also attempted to re-connect with his heritage, and insists that Dave do the same. Dave has spoken Russian ever since he came into his father's house, and it's the only language they really use at home. Dave has become very close with his grandmother in recent years (this has absolutely nothing to do with her chocolate chip cookies, honest). She takes him to church on Sunday and frequently visits the house, both of which only really make him even worse. He feels like he shouldn't be allowed in a church, given what he is, and the comments of the little old ladies about how he's such a 'nice young man' and questions about when he's going to bring home a nice girl...well, we're just not going to touch that one. The only real source of comfort Dave has in his life is Coach Beiste, who he views kind of as a mentor and kind of as a mother-figure (largely because she is a mother figure to the entire football team). She's taken a particular interest in Dave because she "sees a lot of [her]self in him". Dave isn't quite sure what that means, given that she's like fifty years old and only just got her first kiss, but considering she's awesome, he takes it as a compliment. He thinks. Plot Intentions: Hie him to a healer, by which I mean 'get the boy out of the freakin' closet', in more than just revealing his sexuality. Allow him to come to terms with himself. Get him help for his neuroses. Give him the opportunity to make mistakes and learn how to repair them without hurting people or himself. Keep a friendship with Azimio, if possible, but otherwise get him some new friends. Repair his relationship with Kurt | ||||||||||
